An Expert Take on AP Watchkeepers and Luxury Resale in 2026

An Expert Take on AP Watchkeepers and Luxury Resale in 2026

What Audemars Piguet's Watch Keepers program means for pre-owned Royal Oak buyers. Audemars Piguet has officially entered the pre-owned market. On October 26, 2026, the Le Brassus maison launched The Watch Keepers, its own certified pre-owned (CPO) platform for buying and selling secondhand AP watches, starting in Switzerland and the European Union.

This is a bigger deal than it sounds. For decades, nearly every dollar made on a resold Royal Oak went to grey market dealers, auction houses and online marketplaces, not to Audemars Piguet. Back in 2018, then-CEO François-Henry Bennahmias called pre-owned "the next big thing in the watch industry." Eight years later, AP has finally built the program.

But AP did not copy Rolex. The Watch Keepers (often searched as "AP Watchkeepers") runs on a consignment model with its own fees, rules and trade-offs. Here's how it works, what it costs, and what it could mean for grey market prices, including for collectors here in Atlanta.

What Is The Watch Keepers?

The Watch Keepers is Audemars Piguet's official online marketplace for certified pre-owned AP watches. It connects private sellers with buyers, while AP authenticates, grades, photographs, stores and lists every watch itself.

The key point: AP never buys the watch. The brand acts as a facilitator between two parties, not as the buyer or the seller. The owner keeps legal ownership until the sale closes.

The platform covers every AP collection and era, from modern Royal Oaks to discontinued complications. At launch it listed 42 watches, and AP says it plans to keep roughly 100 on offer at any time.

It also doesn't look like a typical watch marketplace. Visitors enter a virtual "villa" with themed rooms, guided by digital avatars of real AP staff called Expert Watch Keepers. It's AP's attempt to bring the hospitality of its AP Houses online. The program is led by Marc Montagne, AP's director of CPO, under CEO Ilaria Resta.

Eight years in the making. AP tested pre-owned in a single Geneva boutique in 2018, shelved it, then came back with a full platform.

How The Watch Keepers Works, Step by Step

Selling through The Watch Keepers follows a set process. Here's how a watch moves from a seller's wrist to a buyer's.

  1. Register and verifyThe seller creates an account and submits the watch's serial number and proof of ownership. Only watches at least two years past their original retail sale qualify.
  2. Ship to APAfter preliminary checks, the watch travels by insured courier to an Audemars Piguet service center.
  3. AuthenticateAP watchmakers compare the watch against the brand's historical archive records and confirm it hasn't been reported stolen.
  4. GradeThe case, dial and bracelet are each graded on a five-point condition scale.
  5. Photograph and listAP shoots high-resolution photos and writes the listing using archive details no independent dealer can access. The seller approves it before it goes live.
  6. Choose a formatFixed price or auction, with an optional reserve price.
  7. Sell and deliverThe watch stays in AP's custody until it sells. The buyer receives a certificate of authenticity, a two-year international warranty, a travel pouch, and the original box and papers when available.
A full service isn't included. If AP's watchmakers find a problem, they recommend a service and bill it to the seller separately. The seller can decline, but then the watch is sent back unsold. That can actually be good news for vintage collectors: an original, unpolished 5402 Royal Oak can lose value if it's over-restored, and AP's model certifies the watch without forcing cosmetic work.

Chart: Three Brands Dominate the Secondary Market

61% 3 brands ~61% Rolex, Patek Philippe & AP ~39% All other watch brands vs. about 45.5% of new-watch sales
What this chart shows: according to LuxeConsult data, just three brands account for roughly 61% of pre-owned watch transaction value, compared with about 45.5% of new watch sales. With the secondary market estimated at CHF 22–24 billion in 2025, AP had a strong reason to claim its share.

What It Costs to Sell Through The Watch Keepers

Only sellers pay. Buyers pay the listed or winning price and nothing on top, which AP has confirmed. The seller's commission is tiered and applied in slices, like a tax bracket:

Portion of the sale price Commission on that slice
First 25,000 20%
25,000 to 50,000 15%
Above 50,000 10%

Amounts are in Swiss francs or euros, depending on the market. Sellers are paid about 15 days after the sale closes, and any recommended service is billed on top.

Chart: Seller Commission by Sale Price

20,000 20.0% 40,000 18.1% 60,000 16.3% 100,000 13.8%
Effective commission rate by sale price (CHF or €). The rate falls as the price rises, because only the slices above 25,000 and 50,000 get the lower rates.
Sale price Total commission Effective rate Seller nets
20,000 4,000 20.0% 16,000
40,000 7,250 18.1% 32,750
60,000 9,750 16.3% 50,250
100,000 13,750 13.8% 86,250
Seller keeps 50,250 (83.7%) AP 9,750 Example: a Royal Oak that sells for 60,000
What this shows: a steel Royal Oak around 40,000 gives up roughly 18% to AP, while a high-end complication pays closer to 14%. To net the same as a private sale, a watch sold through The Watch Keepers has to fetch a meaningfully higher price.

The Watch Keepers vs. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned

Rolex launched its Certified Pre-Owned program in December 2022, so comparisons were inevitable. The two programs share a goal but take opposite routes. Rolex works through its authorized dealers, who buy pre-owned watches, fully service them and resell them at prices they set. Audemars Piguet sells mostly direct, so it runs the whole transaction itself online and never takes ownership of the watch.

Feature AP The Watch Keepers Rolex Certified Pre-Owned
Launched October 2026 December 2022
Where it's sold AP's own online platform Participating authorized dealers
Who owns the watch before sale The private seller (consignment) The dealer (buys it first)
Who sets the price Seller (fixed price or auction) The dealer
Minimum age 2 years from first sale 2 years (since 2025)
Full service included No. Recommended service billed to seller Yes
Warranty 2-year international 2-year international
Current markets Switzerland and EU Many markets, including the US

Key takeaway: Rolex keeps an arm's length from pricing through its dealers. AP puts its own name directly on the transaction, which gives it more control and more data, but also more exposure.

How The Watch Keepers Will Affect the Grey Market

The Watch Keepers won't replace the grey market, but it will change how that market prices, sells and competes. Here are the five shifts we expect.

1. A certified-vs-uncertified price gap

Two identical Royal Oaks, one sold by an independent dealer and one certified by AP, may no longer be worth the same. Factory authentication, an archive-backed listing and a two-year warranty give buyers confidence that a forum post or dealer promise can't match. Expect certified pieces to command a premium once enough sales build a track record.

2. Brand-authored price transparency

This one cuts both ways. When a reference sells on AP's own platform, that price carries AP's name. If a model sells below retail there, AP can no longer blame the grey market. Those results will quickly become benchmarks that dealers, buyers and lenders use to price watches everywhere.

3. Less room for quick flips

The two-year minimum blocks anyone from buying a new Royal Oak and immediately reselling it through official channels. Combined with AP's growing data on who sells which reference and how fast, it's another tool to discourage speculation on allocated models.

4. Grey market dealers keep key advantages

Independent dealers still win on speed and simplicity. They can quote and pay immediately, while The Watch Keepers takes roughly 14% to 20% and pays out about 15 days after a sale. Dealers also bring deep expertise in vintage dial variants and parts, which a certificate alone can't replace.

5. Steady support for values

A brand standing behind its own secondary market tends to boost buyer confidence. Royal Oak prices were already climbing before the launch: the WatchCharts Royal Oak Market Index rose 9.7% over the year to October 20, 2026. An official, warrantied channel should reinforce that trend over time.

Chart: How Fast Brand CPO Can Grow

~$120M Q2 2025 ~$229M Q3 2026 ≈10,300 watches ~1.9×
What this chart shows: Rolex CPO quarterly sales through participating dealers nearly doubled in about a year, based on WatchCharts data. If The Watch Keepers follows a similar path once it expands, a growing slice of AP resale volume will flow through official channels instead of the grey market.

What It Means for US and Atlanta Collectors

For now, American owners can look but not transact. Anyone can browse The Watch Keepers, but only verified users in Switzerland and the EU can buy or sell, and AP hasn't announced a US launch date.

That doesn't make the launch irrelevant here. European sale prices will become public reference points for AP values worldwide, including for the Royal Oaks, Offshores and Code 11.59s worn around Atlanta. If you own an AP, those results are worth watching before you decide to sell, trade or hold.

In the meantime, the old rules still apply in the US: buy from sources you trust, insist on documentation, and get an expert opinion before any major purchase. Masina has spent more than 40 years helping Atlanta clients buy and sell fine jewelry and luxury watches with that kind of care. Thinking about selling? FAQ: Audemars Piguet The Watch Keepers

What is Audemars Piguet The Watch Keepers?

It's AP's official certified pre-owned platform, launched October 26, 2026. Owners consign their AP watches, and the brand authenticates, grades, photographs and lists them for sale online.

Can I buy or sell through The Watch Keepers in the United States?

Not yet. Anyone can browse, but transactions are limited to verified users in Switzerland and the EU. AP plans to expand to more markets but hasn't announced a US date.

How much does it cost to sell my AP through The Watch Keepers?

Sellers pay a tiered commission: 20% on the first 25,000, 15% from 25,000 to 50,000, and 10% above that. Buyers pay no extra fee. Any recommended service is billed to the seller separately.

Does AP service the watch before it's sold?

No, a full service isn't part of the program. AP authenticates and grades the watch, and if it finds an issue, it recommends a paid service. Sellers who decline get their watch back.

Can I flip a new Royal Oak through the program?

No. Watches must be at least two years past their original retail sale date to qualify, which is designed to discourage quick flips.

Will The Watch Keepers lower grey market prices?

Not directly. It's more likely to create a premium for AP-certified watches and to make prices more transparent. Brand-run sales will become public benchmarks, which could strengthen or soften specific references depending on results.

How is The Watch Keepers different from Rolex CPO?

Rolex CPO runs through authorized dealers who buy, service and resell watches. AP never owns the watch, runs the sale itself online, and doesn't include a full service.

Thinking About Buying or Selling a Luxury Watch?

The Watch Keepers is a sign of where the luxury watch market is heading: more authentication, more transparency, and brands taking a direct role in what happens after the first sale. Until it reaches the US, the smartest move is working with a jeweler you trust who can walk you through today's market in person.
